You Can Do Anything

"You can do anything you put your mind to." That statement might be cliché, but it's so real. One day I was lying in my bed, scrolling on Instagram at 1:30 in the morning when I came across an advertisement for an artist's show. I went to the artist's page and saw that the gallery hosting the show was tagged in the photo, so I clicked on the page. As I looked through the gallery's Instagram feed, I thought to myself, "my paintings would be perfect here." Then all of a sudden, it's as if a lightbulb went off. I immediately felt, throughout my entire body, that I can do anything. If I want my artwork in a gallery or that gallery, then I can do it. I have the power to make it happen. Before that ah-ha moment, I would doubt if I was even "ready" enough for the opportunities that I wanted. For me, to experience the feeling that I could do anything was a big deal.

As kids, we're taught that we can be anything we want to be. The school teacher would go around the class, asking every student what they wanted to be when they grew up. A firefighter, astronaut, and doctor, to name a few. To be encouraged in that way as a child is great. However, somewhere along the line, we lose sight of that, and the luxury of choosing what we want to be seems to be taken away from us as adults. I believe that's why we feel conflicted and doubt if we can do anything because being financially secure has become the most important thing and not our happiness. Now you think that you have to choose the "right" job to be successful in life. What our society fails to realize is that one, doing what you love to do, and two, knowing that you can do anything, will produce stability in an individual. With stability comes security in a person's life. It's a mindset thing, and knowing that is the most important thing.

If there is something that you've been holding back to go after, don't. Unpack the opinions of people, along with the comparisons to someone else's life, and start building yourself up. If you genuinely desire to do something and live in your purpose, you have to believe that you can do anything. Focus on your talents and not on if you're ready or good enough. You can't say you're not ready for something if you never start. Over time you will improve and grow and will find your confidence. It's time for us to stop telling ourselves what we can't do, and start saying what we can. You will walk through many doors of opportunities once you believe that you can do anything.
